Educating the General Population

We have created “The Healthy Potato” nutrition tool kit to help you communicate to adult consumers some potato nutrition facts they may find surprising. Empower your clients, patients, and/or students with nutrition facts. Give them permission to enjoy their favorite vegetable and benefit from the nutrients it provides. The presentation is suitable for a variety of populations because the potato is America’s favorite vegetable, an integral part of most ethnic cuisines, inexpensive, versatile, and available year-round. The entire kit can be presented in one 30-minute class.

We have also created a “Low Carb Diets” PowerPoint presentation and presenter notes. Please use this as a tool to educate consumers about the current environment surrounding low carb diets.

The following presentation explains the history, limitations and bottom line of the Glycemic Index. It can be used to educate the general population about the GI, especially in respect to the potato.

Educating Children

The Facts

Obesity affects 5.3 million young people (ages 6-17 years) in the United States. To help combat child obesity, the United States Potato Board (USPB) has partnered with Healthy Kids Challenge (HKC). The HKC program, founded by Cooking Light magazine, creates opportunities for healthful eating and physical activity in schools and communities, enabling children and their families to make healthier lifestyle choices.

The HKC advocates four components for change - nutrition education, healthier school meals, increased physical activity and community involvement. The USPB supports these four components by providing K-5 schools with materials that promote healthful eating. Materials are distributed to school food service employees, teachers, children and parents. These materials include recipes, lesson plans for teachers and ideas to get parents involved at home.

Visit www.healthykidschallenge.com to learn more about the program and how your child's school can become an HKC school.
